No Fry Falafel
Fillaupnow on these air-fried gluten free falafels. This healthy alternative to deep fried falafel turned out to be a pleasant surprise that was enjoyed by all. They are packed with flavor and rolled in gluten free bread crumbs to help help achieve an even crunchier crust. Air-frying in our new Cuisinart toaster/airfryer really delivered! I wanted a falafel that I could prep in 15 minutes or less and since we were air-frying we did not need to use dried beans that had been soaked overnight. I never plan that far in advance! These falafels were made quickly using 2 cans of garbanzo beans drained and blended up with an array of spices. We had a tasty, healthy, Vegan, gluten free dinner in less than 45 minutes with only 15 minutes of prep. We definitely did not miss the deep fryer and we felt great and guilt free afterwards. This meal will make a frequent visit to kitchen!
Recipe
Ingredients
2 Cans Garbanzo Beans
1 tspn Cumin Seeds
1/3 cup lightly packed chopped Parsley
1/3 cup lightly packed chopped Cilantro
3 small shallots
1 tspn Peppercorns
1 tspn Baking Powder
1/3 cup Almond Flour
1/3 cup Pumpkin Seeds
4 cloves Garlic
1/2 yellow Onion
1 tspn Chili Powder
1/2 tspn Paprika
1 tspn Tumeric
1 tspn Salt
1/4 cup Sesame Seeds
Directions
Step 1: Drain the Garbanzo beans, and squeeze out extra liquid in a clean dish towel
Step 2: In a pestle and mortar grind the parsley, garlic, shallots, cumin and peppercorns into a paste.
Step 3: Combine all remaining ingredients in a blender, except for the sesame seeds and bread crumbs. Blend well, and set aside in a bowl.
Step 4: Combine the sesame seeds into the falafel mix. this gives them a bit of texture
Step 5: Roll into 1 1/2 inch balls and roll in gluten free bread crumbs. My falafels where a bit smaller than normal falafels in order to achieve the crunchy outside on more falafel surface area. Since we were not deep frying I knew the crunchy texture would not be as deep as the fryer method so smaller falafels provided more crunchy bits
Step 6: Place in air-fryer at 375 for about 20 - 25 minutes. be sure to watch them carefully so they don’t burn. You want them slightly browned on the outside and cooked all the way through on the inside. If the temp is too high they will burn and the inside will be cold.
Step 7: Serve on toast naan bread with hummus and/or tzatziki sauce
